Joris Van Cauter

 

Joris Van Cauter graduated in 1998 from Ghent University where he obtained his degree in moral sciences.  

 

In 2002 he obtained his law degree, also from Ghent University.  

 

In 2002 Joris Van Cauter started working as a lawyer under the supervision of mr. Filip D'Hont at the Bar in Gent.  

 

From the 1ste of september 2003 to 1ste of september 2011, he worked at Rieder & Verdonck, where he became a partner on the 1st of September 2008 (Rieder, Verdonck & Van Cauter).

 

On september 1, 2011, he established his own law firm.  

 

Joris Van Cauter is active in all fields of criminal law. He often deals with media-sensitive cases and is known for his technical and scientifical legal approach.

 

Joris Van Cauter is certified to conduct procedures before the Court of Cassation.


He is also a publicist for De Standaard and for De Morgen.

Karel De Meester

Karel De Meester obtained a master's degree in law from KU Leuven in 2005.  

 

In 2006 he graduated from the EIUC Venice and Maastricht University as a Masters in Human Rights and Democratization.   

 

Karel De Meester obtained a Ph.D in law from the University of Amsterdam in 2015 on 'The investigation phase in International Criminal Procedure' (Intersentia, 2015).

 

Between 2011 and 2015, he worked as an assistant at KU Leuven and Hasselt University.   

 

Karel De Meester has been working at Van Cauter Advocaten since october 2014, where he started his internship as a lawyer under the supervision mr. Joris Van Cauter.  

 

In october 2017, Karel De Meester was admitted to the tableau of the Bar in Ghent.   

 

Karel De Meester is certified to conduct procedures before the Court of Cassation.

 

He is the author of numerous academic publications.

Julie Verbeek

Julie Verbeek obtained a master's degree in law from UGent in 2009.

 

In 2010, she also obtained the degree of teacher in law and the certificate of mediation in family cases at UGent.

 

Then, in 2010, lawyer Julie Verbeek started her traineeship at the Bar of Ghent and in December 2013 she was admitted to the Tableau of the Bar Association of Ghent.

 

In 2014, she set up her own office in Oostkamp and was also included in the Tableau of the Bruges Bar Association.

 

She built up extensive expertise in civil and corporate law.

 

Since 2020, she has joined the Van Cauter Advocaten team and is responsible for the files in her area of expertise.

Catherine Gysels

Catherine Gysels obtained her Master of Laws degree with distinction from the University of Antwerp in 2011.

 

That same year, she started her internship at the Antwerp Bar under the internship supervisory role of Dirk Van Putten. In October 2014, Catherine Gysels was admitted to the Antwerp Bar Association. Between 2017 and 2021, she worked at DLA Piper in Brussels, where she focused on economic-financial criminal law cases.

 

Since 2021, lawyer Catherine Gysels has joined the team of Van Cauter Advocaten and is responsible for the matters in her area of ​​expertise.

 

Catherine Gysels has also been affiliated with the University of Antwerp as a practice assistant in criminal (procedural) law since 2014.

 

Catherine Gysels certified to conduct procedures before the Court of Cassation.

 

She is also the author of numerous academic publications.

Julie Lenaerts

Julie Lenaerts obtained her master’s degree in law with distinction from the KU Leuven in 2019.

 

In 2020 she obtained an additional master in tax law with distinction from the KU Leuven.

 

In April 2020, Julie Lenaerts was part of the KU Leuven team that made it to the finals of the International and European Tax Moot Court. In doing so, she won two individual prizes: the prize for Best Individual Applicant and the prize for Best Applicant's Oral Pleading.

 

Julie Lenaerts has been working at Van Cauter Advocaten since August 2020, when she started her internship as a lawyer under the supervision of mr. Joris Van Cauter.

 

Julie Lenaerts is certified to conduct procedures before the Court of Cassation.

 

She also holds the 'Supralat - Salduz training' certificate.

Liesbeth Dhaenens

Liesbeth Dhaenens obtained her research master's degree in law at the KU Leuven with high distinction in 2023.

 

In doing so, she finalised a bilingual track (Dutch-French), as well as a study at the law faculty of the University of Edinburgh.

 

In 2022-2023, she was part of the interfaculty teaching project ‘Advantage of Doubt’, investigating a criminal case of an allegedly innocent convicted person.

 

Lawyer Liesbeth Dhaenens has been working at Van Cauter Advocaten since the summer of 2023, when she started her internship as a lawyer under the supervision of mr. Joris Van Cauter.

 

Liesbeth Dhaenens sits on the board of the Committee of Interns of the Ghent Lawyers’ Bar.

 

Liesbeth Dhaenens holds the ‘Supralat - Salduz training’ certificate.

Innes Parmentier

Innes Parmentier obtained her Master of Laws degree from KU Leuven in 2024.

 

She commenced her law studies in 2019 at KULAK.

 

In 2022-2023, she was part of the LCM Student Association's inter-faculty student association, where she participated in the Negotiation track to further develop her negotiation and mediation skills.

 

Lawyer Innes Parmentier has been working at the firm Van Cauter Advocaten since October 2024, where she started her bar traineeship under the supervision of mr Joris Van Cauter.
